The pharmaceutical industry and academe: partners in progress.

The relations between the pharmaceutical industry and academe are examined. It is concluded that although each has its own particular contributions to society, a more important issue is to explore and expedite innovative mechanisms for mutually advantageous collaboration which maximize the interest and expertise of both. The impact of present regulatory mechanisms on pharmaceutical research is discussed.
