Computer analysis of micturating cystourethrograms in children.

R G Buick, B O'Donnell, A McAllindin.

Abstract

A study of the radiology reports of 1806 children who had a micturating cystourethrogram (MCU) performed during a 5-yr period was undertaken and submitted for computer analysis. The results of this analysis suggest that both an intravenous pyelogram (IVP), and an MCU are necessary preliminary investigations in patients suspected of having primary vesicoureteric reflux. A significant number of children who had a normal initial IVP were found to have vesicoureteric reflux on the first MCU, especially in the younger age groups. Patients with a normal initial IVP who had no reflux or only minor degrees of reflux on the first MCU did not significantly increase their degree of reflux on a subsequent MCU. These children may be confidently managed without repeated cystographic studies.
