Dietary consideration in MAO inhibitor regimens.

B McCabe, M T Tsuang.

Abstract

This paper proposes a reasonable MAOI diet, in common food terms, with a rationale supported by a critical review of the literature. Exaggerated fears of food and MAOI interactions can be alleviated and MAOIs should not be withheld from patients who could benefit from the treatment. Principles for dietary counseling of patients receiving MAOIs are listed and suggestions for achieving dietary adherence are made.
