Reye's syndrome in Johannesburg. Epidemiology and clinical presentation.

The aetiology of Reye's syndrome is uncertain. Factors such as environment (urban or rural), socioeconomic conditions and race seem to influence the variation in incidence. These factors, as well as clinical presentation, were studied in the Johannesburg area over a 5-year period. The preceding illness differed from that in the other reports. The pattern of presentation among the White population has changed.
