Gas exchange in the adult respiratory distress syndrome.

D R Dantzker.

Abstract

The hypoxemia of ARDS may result from numerous and varied stresses to the system responsible for gas exchange in the lung. These may be both pulmonary and non-pulmonary in origin. A thorough understanding of all the factors involved is necessary to correctly interpret and treat these complex and critically ill patients.
