Quantitative assay of dissociated tissue-cell motility in vitro.

K S Stenn.

Abstract

A simple method for quantitating the motile properties of a dissociated tissue cell preparation is presented. A cell population is allowed to grow over a glass cover slip coated with Scarlet Red-containing Formvar. At confluence, the preparation is cut with a razor to remove a portion of the cells and the underlying pigmented Formavar and then returned to culture conditions. Using the cut edge as the starting line, cell motility can be easily measured. In this assay irradiated and nonirradiated 3T3 cells show similar motility characteristics over a 3-day observation period suppirting the interpretation that the observed movement is due primarily to active cell motility rather than cell growth.
