Abstract
The dimension and direction of net migration of dentists in relation to Australia have been documented, the possible determinants and consequences discussed, and need for regulatory action considered. A new inflow of dentists has existed over the period of 1967 to 1980, with a marked increase after 1974. Determinants of the migration are discussed as push, pull, and regulatory forces, while consequences are discussed within the areas of international issues, quantity issues, and quality issues. The need for better data collection, and for extensive study of the impact of foreign dental graduates on Australian dentistry are emphasized. Types of regulatory action considered for the migration of dentists into Australia included restrictive, preventive, and restorative, with restrictive actions being considered least appropriate.Mesh:
