Cutis verticis gyrata: unusual chloromatous disease in acute myelogenous leukemia.

B D Cheson, R M Christiansen.

Abstract

Chloromas are an unusual finding in patients with acute or chronic granulocytic leukemia. The present report describes a man with acute myelogenous leukemia (AML) whose course was complicated by cutis verticis gyrata (CVG), a mediastinal mass, neuropathies, and hepatosplenomegaly as a result of visceral involvement. Leukemic tumors and organ infiltration developed independent of his hematologic status and resulted in significant morbidity and, eventually, mortality from gastrointestinal hemorrhage. Nevertheless, at least temporary control over these complications was achieved when they were managed as leukemic "sanctuaries" and treated with local irradiation.
