Serous detachment of the macular associated with presumed choroidal nevi.

M Pro, J A Shields, T L Tomer.

Abstract

Twenty cases of small pigmented choroidal lesions, which were associated with subretinal fluid in the foveal area, were studied clinically and with fluorescein angiography. The ophthalmoscopic appearance as well as the clinical course of these lesions suggest that they are benign. One lesion, however, after remaining stable for four years, showed dramatic enlargement and was demonstrated to be a malignant melanoma following enucleation. The occurrence of subretinal fluid in such cases does not necessarily imply malignant change, although careful follow-up examinations are imperative.
