Abstract
Among 10 hospitals of the North East Thames Region, 84 patients were operated on for inflammatory bowel disease in the years 1977-81. There was one death in the 51 patients treated electively. The postoperative mortality was 24% in 33 patients coming to urgent surgery. The factors leading to this continuing high mortality are analysed as a contribution to an improvement in management.Entities:
