Pneumomediastinum after dental extraction.

R W Ikard.

Abstract

In the preceding case, air dissection into the subcutaneous space and mediastinum was caused by the removal of an impacted third molar with a high-speed drill. Such surgery can result in a typical clinical complex lasting a few days and consisting of pain, dyspnea, fever, and leukocytosis. Because there is a potential for mediastinitis, antibiotic therapy is indicated.
