Abstract
The use of antibiotics to prevent infective endocarditis is accepted medical practice in risk patients. The author discusses some basic problems surrounding the development of endocarditis following interventions likely to produce bacteremia, and indicates guidelines for the prevention of this infection. Antibiotic regimens for the usual forms of endocarditis are summarized, and the role of surgery in active infection is discussed.Entities:
