Pyogenic liver abscess. A case report with a short review of current concepts of diagnosis and management.

M R Sørensen, N Baekgaard, P Kirkegaard.

Abstract

A case of a large pyogenic liver abscess in a 16-year-old boy with appendicitis is presented. The clinical picture, bacteriology and treatment of the disease are discussed on the basis of 397 cases reported in the literature. It is concluded that ultrasound scanning of the liver is essential for early diagnosis and that the treatment of choice is percutaneous needle aspiration in combination with bactericidal antibiotics.
