Superior mesenteric artery injury following blunt abdominal trauma: case report with successful primary repair.

A T Pezzella, W O Griffen, C B Ernst.

Abstract

A case of blunt abdominal trauma causing injury to the superior mesenteric artery with successful management is presented. The role of aortography in diagnosis is discussed. The patient, with multiple chest injuries sustained in an automobile accident, has recovered following surgical repair of a laceration of the SMA, treatment for respiratory distress, and spontaneous cessation of rectal diverticular bleeding.
