Abstract
Software safety becomes an issue when life-critical systems are built with computers as important components. In order to make these systems safe, software developers have concentrated on making them ultrareliable. Unfortunately, this will not necessarily make them safe. This paper discusses why reliability enhancement techniques are not adequate to ensure safety and describes what needs to be done to protect life and property in these systems.Mesh:
