Assessment of potential activation of gonyautoxin V in the stomach of mice and rats.

T Harada, Y Oshima, T Yasumoto.

Abstract

Transformation of gonyautoxin V, a paralytic shellfish toxin of low lethality, to highly potent saxitoxin in the stomach was assessed by incubation in gastric juices. Only 8-15% of the toxin was converted to saxitoxin under drastic conditions. Comparison of oral and i.p. LD50 values of both toxins indicated that little conversion took place in the stomach of mice.
