Abstract

A double-antibody indirect ELISA using a chromogenic substrate and a single-antibody sandwich direct ELISA using chromogenic and fluorogenic substrates were developed for the detection of the human papovaviruses BKV and JCV. All three assays were comparable in their sensitivity. BKV was detected in urine from 12 of 63 (19%) highly immunocompromised patients and JCV in urine from 4 of 31 (12.9%) patients by the indirect method.
