Abstract
Currently defined categories of diabetes mellitus reflect our growing knowledge of the biochemical and immunologic basis of several disorders resulting in hyperglycemia. The authors discuss the autoimmune phenomenon and autoimmune diseases associated with Type I diabetes mellitus. Special focus is placed on the impact of immunologic assays on the current and future clinical care of patients with Type I diabetes and their genetically susceptible relatives.Entities:
