Abstract
The present state of the art in medical treatment of ulcerative colitis is reviewed in the light of lifelong clinical experience with this disease. The importance of treating the acute episode early and efficiently is emphasized, and a differentiated therapeutic regimen according to disease activity is outlined. Salazopyrin has proved to be the only effective drug in reducing the incidence of recurrences. The criteria for surgical treatment are discussed.Entities:
