[Late infections after artificial joint replacement with a septic course].

K Buchholz.

Abstract

Acute staphylococcal sepsis is a rare complication following artificial joint replacement. Daignostic problems are due to the systemic toxic effects of staphylococci. Loosening of the prosthesis is generally observed later. For therapy of staphylococcal sepsis the prosthesis has to be changed early, using a tested antibotic mixed with the bone cement, Palacos. Prophylaxis is most important. It includes the elimination of infectious foci, the strong indication for all therapeutic measurements and the general use of the antibiotic, Gentamycin, with the bone cement, Palacos.
