Abstract
A culture of a mutant of Escherichia coli, derepressed for gluconate catabolism, is killed by the addition of gluconate to the culture. The product responsible for this bactericidal effect was identified as methylglyoxal. Two types of mutants resistant to gluconate were isolated.
