Sarcocystis cymruensis n. sp., a parasite of rats Rattus norvegicus and cats Felis catus.

R W Ashford.

Abstract

Sarcocystic cymruensis n. sp. is described from wild Rattus norvegicus. The parasite, which was maintained cyclically in rats and cats in the laboratory, resembles S. muris but was not infective for laboratory mice. Sporocysts were produced by cats within four days, but only in very small numbers. Muscle cysts were distinguishable in rats after three months, and grew continuously reacing 5 cm in length at nine months.
