TURP without TURP syndrome.

D W Gale, R G Notley.

Abstract

A series of 500 patients studied retrospectively and prospectively to examine changes in the serum sodium following transurethral resection of the prostate showed no significant incidence of induced hyponatraemia. The TURP syndrome has not been encountered clinically in this department for 10 years, which correlates with the findings of this study. The possible reasons are the habitual use of the irrigating resectoscope, a policy of simplification of management for patients undergoing TURP, and operations being performed only by experienced surgeons.
