The letter of recommendation.

This month I discuss the dilemma of the department chief who has been asked to write a letter of recommendation for a trainee who has a few deficient areas of endoscopic ability. I emphasize the basic duty of the author to be honest as I describe the contents of the letter. Finally, I discuss the issue of potential legal liability for the author of either a favorable or unfavorable letter.
