Stepwise selection of defective nitrogen-fixing phenotypes in Escherichia coli K-12 by dimethyl sulfoxide.

Abstract

Storage in dimethyl sulfoxide of Escherichia coli K-12 hybrids carrying Klebsiella pneumoniae nif+ genes can result in selection of a defective nitrogen-fixing phenotype. Dimethyl sulfoxide appears to affect particular inner membrane proteins associated with energy metabolism in E. coli K-12.
