Acanthamoeba keratitis. A clinicopathological case report.

M Hanssens, J F de Jonckheere, C de Meunynck.

Abstract

A case of amoebic keratitis is described in a 34-year-old male patient who got glass wool dust in his eye. The keratitis ran a chronic course over more than 8 months and was resistant to topical antibiotics, steroids and antiviral drugs. A perforating keratoplasty was performed, and 1 year later the condition appears satisfactory. Histopathological examination of the corneal disc revealed many encysted amoebae which were classified as belonging to the genus Acanthamoeba. This is the first case of amoebic keratitis to be recorded in Belgium. The report includes a review of the literature on the subject.
