Abstract
Colonoscopy is the only major advancement in the diagnosis of colonic diseases since the first barium-enema examination was performed in 1905. The indications are many and contraindications few. If colonoscopy is performed with care, it is safe and the results are rewarding. Patient comfort, integrity, and dignity are essential for the success of the procedure. Five hundred sixty-two colonoscopies were performed during a four-year period in Ife, Nigeria (1978 to 1982). The indications for colonoscopy are discussed and the results presented.Entities:
