Elements of empathic care for dying patients and their families.

R Tyner.

Abstract

Empathy presents unique challenges to the nurse who cares for dying patients and their families. It must be a focused process in which the nurse exhibits genuineness, warmth, and a positive regard for the patient's concerns. This article explores a philosophical framework as well as the behavioral and attitudinal aspects of the empathic process in relationships with the patient and family members.
