Abstract

Updated guidelines are presented for the safe and effective use of lithium; covering indications, treatment management, duration of prophylactic treatment, side-effects and their prevention, overdosage, interactions, and contraindications. Alternatives to lithium and patient-doctor co-operation are discussed.
