Stress-coping-support in rural communities: a model for primary prevention.

M B Kenkel.

Abstract

Historically, primary prevention has been a major activity of rural community mental health programs. Prevention efforts can be conceptualized as either decreasing stress, increasing coping abilities, building support, or a combination of these. This article discusses rural stressors, coping strategies, and support systems, and describes prevention programs directed toward each of these areas.
