Obstructed defaecation.

D Bartolo, A Roe.

Abstract

Obstructed defaecation is a common anorectal symptom frequently but not invariably associated with perineal descent. Associated excessive straining at stool leads to external sphincter neuropathy, but this per se does not cause incontinence. Where simple measures are unsuccessful evacuation proctography should elucidate the cause of the obstructive constipation and allow rational treatment.
