Neuroleptic drugs: how to reduce the risk of tardive dyskinesia.

J DeVeaugh-Geiss.

Abstract

Prescribing neuroleptic drugs to control disruptive behavior in geriatric patients exposes them to the risk of tardive dyskinesia. Neuroleptics must be administered in the lowest effective dose for the shortest possible period, and should be given only for specific indications, usually psychotic disorders.
