Abstract
BACKGROUND: Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is a lung disease that is thought to result from chronic inflammation that may affect other organ systems. Similarly, metabolic syndrome includes central obesity, hypertriglyceridemia, low high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C), hyperglycemia, and hypertension. The prevalence of metabolic syndrome and its associated factors among female COPD patients in northern India needs to be evaluated. AIM ANDEntities:

Criteria for clinical diagnosis of metabolic syndrome according to National Cholesterol Education Program: Adult Treatment Panel III (NCEP: ATP III)
cm:centimeter, mg/dL: milligram/decilitre, mmol/L: millimole/litre, mmHg: millimeter of mercury, HDL-C: High-density lipoprotein cholesterol
| Measure (any 3 of 5 constitute for diagnosis of metabolic syndrome) | Categorical cut points |
| Elevated waist circumference | ≥102 cm (≥40 inches) in men & ≥88 cm (≥35 inches) in women |
| Elevated triglycerides | ≥150 mg/dL (1.7 mmol/L) or,on drug treatment for elevated triglycerides |
| Reduced HDL-C | <40 mg/dL (1.03 mmol/L) in men & <50 mg/dL (1.3 mmol/L) in women or, on drug treatment for reduced HDL-C |
| Elevated blood pressure | ≥130 mmHg systolic blood pressure or,≥85 mmHg diastolic blood pressure or, on antihypertensive drug treatment in a patient with a history of hypertension |
