Abstract
Background: Although cognitive-behavioural treatments for chronic pain are delivered in groups, there is little research investigating group effects in these treatments. Purpose: The aim of this study was to investigate associations between group composition variables at the start of treatment and individual outcomes following intensive interdisciplinary treatment for pain based on Acceptance and Commitment Therapy.Entities:

|---|---|
| Psychology | ‘Passengers on the bus’ metaphor: |
| Participants encouraged to connect with a scenario where they are drivers of a ‘bus’ through their life-journey. They focus on how internal experiences (e.g. thoughts, memories, emotions, sensations) are like ‘passengers’ who will try to influence the direction of the ‘bus’. Participants are supported to think about which directions they want to move towards in their own journey through life, and to feel in control of their decisions in the presence of difficult internal experiences (processes: defusion, acceptance, self-as-context, values, committed action) | |
| Physiotherapy | Mindful movement: |
| Participants are guided through gentle movement with a focus on noticing sensations, urges, thoughts, habits, and decision-making as they do this (processes: present moment awareness, acceptance, defusion) | |
| Occupational Therapy | Goal-setting: |
| Participants are supported to identify and work towards values-based goals, identifying potential barriers and sources of support (processes: values, committed action). | |
| Pain Nursing | Pain medication education and reviews: |
| Information is provided in relation to commonly prescribed pain medications, with focus on effectiveness and side-effects, and support is given to reduce dosages when this is important to the patient (processes: values, openness). |
