Abstract
Objectives: Liquid-based cytology (LBC) is becoming a useful method in evaluating both gynecological and nongynecological preparations. Many studies have been conducted these days to see the quality of LBC in diagnosing thyroid lesions and its role is yet to be standardized. This study has been done to pick the cytomorphological features of thyroid lesions on LBC and to compare them with the conventional cytology of these lesions. The objective of the study is to evaluate the efficacy of thyroid fine-needle aspiration cytology processed by LBC as compared to conventional smears. Distribution of cases and their LBC findings.
| S. No. | Cytological diagnosis | No. of cases | Percentage | Cytomorphological findings in Liquid Based Cytology |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1. | Colloid nodular goitre | 27 | 50.9 | Colloid globules (small clumps of dense colloid) |
| 2. | Hashimoto’s thyroiditis/lymphocytic thyroiditis | 14 | 26.4 | Lymphoepithelial clusters |
| 3. | Neoplasms | 3 | 5.7 | Nuclear inclusions in Papillary carcinoma |
| 4. | Hyperplasia | 3 | 5.7 | Fire flares |
| 5. | Descriptive | 6 | 11.3 | Better adequacy |
Differences in cytomorphological features on conventional cytology smears and liquid-based cytology preparations.
| S. No. | Cytological diagnosis | Morphological features on conventional smears | Morphological features on liquid-based cytology |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1. | Colloid Nodular Goitre | Thyroid follicular cells with colloid in the background | Clear background showing only scant colloid in small droplets, no blood in the background [ |
| 2. | Hashimoto’s thyroiditis/lymphocytic thyroiditis | Thyroid follicular cells with lymphocytic impingement. Blood in the background [ | Clearer background [ |
| 3. | Neoplasms | Cytomorphological features and arrangements easily appreciated on Conventional Smears | Nuclear features are better appreciated on LBC. Easier to perform ancillary techniques like Immunocytochemistry and special stains to reach out a better and early diagnosis [ |
