The Editorial Board of European Heart Journal Open (EHJ Open) has unlocked the doors to open science in cardiology—#OpenUpYourScience. EHJ Open is designed to facilitate fluid and open communication between all subject sections in cardiology, with the aim of achieving open and interactive science for a broad readership (). EHJ Open is an open house for all researchers, readers, practitioners, and allied professionals in cardiology. The section editors consolidate to allow an accelerated and global sharing of high-quality science on all aspects of cardiovascular disease (CVD). Editorial structure of EHJ Open. The first article published in EHJ Open revealed that Heart Failure (Section Editor: Gianluigi Savarese) rose to the top of the list of cardiovascular causes of hospitalizations in the USA. Alongside this paper in the first issue, we present novel findings in a nationwide cohort of many millions of subjects on CVD prediction, published in the section Epidemiology & Prevention (Section Editor: Karolina Szummer). The first EHJ Open issue in addition hosts biomarker studies from large populations identifying trimethyllysine associated with increased mortality risk both in the absence and presence of Coronary Artery Disease (Deputy and Section Editor: Maciej Banach). The house of EHJ Open is expanded to Vascular Medicine (Section Editor: Denis Wahl) to provide space for the entire cardiovascular system, covering the full spectrum of arterial and venous diseases, cardiovascular affection of systemic diseases, and a special focus on stroke as link between the heart and brain. The results of a European survey on the management of Hypertension (Deputy and Section Editor: Thomas Kahan) are presented in the first EHJ Open issue. The underlying Cardiovascular Genetics (Section Editor: Susanna Larsson) is of additional major importance for risk factor evaluation, addressing the scientific questions on causality through Mendelian Randomization and by expanding the emerging field of cardio-genetics, which links to the section on Arrhythmia and Electrophysiology (Deputy and Section Editor: Frieder Braunschweig), Cardiovascular Imaging (Section Editor: Alessia Gimelli) contains a tool box of advanced techniques to optimize the cardiovascular diagnostics and prediction, both at rest and during stress. The imaging section room is also accessible through several other sections, as illustrated by the novel technique four-dimensional flow magnetic resonance imaging to evaluate the cavopulmonary connection in Adult Congenital Heart Disease (Section Editor: Edit Nagy). The latest ESC Guidelines on the management of adult congenital heart disease pointed out the advances in this field for not only risk stratification and medical treatments but also for Interventional Cardiology and Cardiac Surgery (Section Editor: Salvatore De Rosa). The importance of the latter section for coronary and Valvular Heart Disease (Section Editor: Patrizio Lancellotti) will build the bridge not only between prevention and intervention in cardiology but also between surgical, interventional, and medical approaches. Special Populations (Section Editor: Linda Mellbin) of increasing interest in cardiology traditionally focus on comorbidities in terms of diabetes and chronic kidney disease. An expanding field into also cardio-oncology and the field of sex-differences and gender dimensions in cardiology. Other special population is the elderly and the most recent special population in cardiology: coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). We present in this issue the results of the randomized controlled Three C trial for canakinumab-treatment of cardiac patients with SARS-CoV2 infection. and the invited commentary by Dr Paul M. Ridker on what we have learned from targeting cytokine storm in COVID-19. COVID-19 is also recognized as important topic for Translational Basic Science (Section Editor: Daniel Ketelhuth), in the present issue addressing the mechanistic link between SARS CoV2 vaccination and thrombotic complications. To focus on findings allowing a rapid transfer of basic science findings into clinical practice, this section covers of a broad spectrum of translational cardiovascular research by budding into vesicles of vascular and myocardial biology as well as atherosclerosis and thrombosis (). We all gather to welcome you to our #EHJOpen house and to follow @ehjopen on Twitter and hope that you enjoy reading the first issue. We commit to our full-hearted support of the entire cardiology community to #OpenUpYourScience. Conflict of interest: none declared.
