Abstract
BACKGROUND: Patients with anorexia nervosa (AN) often refuse treatment despite their extremely low nutritional status. This study investigated the methods of assessing the mental capacity of patients with anorexia nervosa (AN) who refuse treatment by physicians in Japan, the United Kingdom (UK), and the United States (USA). It also identified the key points of the assessment.Entities:

Factor to be emphasized when assessing mental capacity of patients with anorexia nervosa
| Short-term memory | Ability to express a choice or preference | Level of psychopathological values | Ability to understand medical information given | Consciousness of disease | Ability to appreciate medical information as it relates to oneself | Ability to process reasonable information | Conscious level | Consistency of preference | Ability to weigh competing factors | |
