Abstract
Background: Awareness of aging brings to light one's own perceived behavioral, physical, and cognitive changes associated with getting older. Personality and physical illness are each related to two components of awareness of aging: attitudes toward own aging (ATOA), and awareness of age-related changes (AARC). Here, we move beyond main effects to examine how personality and arthritis interact with respect to awareness of aging. Materials andEntities:
Keywords: arthritis; attitudes toward own aging; awareness of age-related change; awareness of aging; personality

FIGURE 1Interaction of arthritis and agreeableness predicting AARC gains. *p < 0.01. The y-axis values reflect predicted AARC gain scores. The slope values and (standard errors) appear above the lines for those with and without arthritis. The points were derived from predicting the values using low (Mean–1 SD) and high (Mean + 1 SD) values of agreeableness for those with and without arthritis, as recommended by Preacher et al. (2006).
