Abstract
The collective term acute coronary syndrome (ACS) encompasses ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI) and non-ST-segment elevation ACS (NSTE-ACS). The latter comprises unstable angina pectoris and non-ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction (NSTEMI). The diagnosis of STEMI necessitates an immediate referral to cardiac catheterization. The diagnostics and management of NSTE-ACS are more challenging. The current guidelines of the European Society of Cardiology (ESC) for treatment of NSTE-ACS were published in 2020 and deal with the topics of diagnostics, risk stratification, antithrombotic treatment, invasive or non-invasive coronary diagnostics and long-term treatment. The focus of the guidelines is on the application of high-sensitivity cardiac troponin assay(hs-cTn) combined with verified diagnostic algorithms to enable a rapid triage decision (rule-in as possible NSTEMI or rule-out as NSTEMI excluded) in the emergency room or the chest pain unit.Entities:
