Abstract

Purpose: The study goal was to report research gaps in this field of diabetes complications in the past five years in Iran.
Methods: All diabetes research outputs by Iranians from Jan 2015 to Jan 2020 were retrieved by a comprehensive search in Scopus and Pubmed. After screening, remained documents were categorized into areas including complications, comorbidity, prevention, psychology, nutrition, physical activity, treatment, and gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM).
Results: 838 documents about complications were received and among the remained records, the most common topics respectively were about microvascular (44.99%), non-vascular complications (19.13%) and macrovascular (16.74%) complications. Regarding the level of evidence the most common studies were respectively animal studies (68%), case-control (57%) and randomized clinical trial (RCT) (39%). Conclusions: The most common topics studied in Iran in the field of diabetes complication are microvascular compilations followed by non-vascular and macrovascular complications, respectively. © Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2022.
