Abstract
BACKGROUND: Adolescent childbirth is a major public health problem in Sao Tome and Principe (STP). Adolescent pregnancy and childbirth can carry a risk of morbidity associated with the physiological and sociological characteristics of teenage girls. This study aims to identify the main adverse obstetric and perinatal outcomes for adolescent pregnancies in the Hospital Dr. Ayres de Menezes (HAM), the only hospital in STP.Entities:

* The proportion of primigravidas was higher in the adolescent group (OR 15.7, 95% CI 9–26, p ≤ 0.001) as compared to the older women as well as for nulliparous with 80.6% (83) in the first group and 16.3% (65) in the latter
**Compared to older mothers, adolescent mothers are likely to have a non-statistical significance of a threefold higher risk of having an obstructed labour

Mode of delivery and its complications
| Characteristics | Newborns from adolescents’ mothers | Newborns form older women | OR | CI | |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Normal vaginal delivery | 89 (84.8%) | 361 (84%) | 1.14 | 0.6–2.1 | 0.67 |

| Postpartum haemorrhage | 3 (2.9%) | 8 (1.9%) | 1.6 | 0.41 – 5.9 | 0.51 |
*When adjusted the predicted probability of episiotomy is reduced to near zero with age, with teenagers having a probability of about 0,2 (Fig. 2)
Abbreviations: OR Odds Ratio, CI Confidence interval
