Abstract
BACKGROUND: Multifocal atrophic gastritis and intestinal metaplasia are considered to be important links in the gastric precancerous cascade. However, there are no specific drugs for these conditions. Although many studies have shown that traditional Chinese medicine is effective with no serious side effects, these studies have not been scientifically rigorous trials. Our aim is to design a high-quality trial for a Chinese patent medicine, Elian Granules, to investigate its efficacy and safety in treating patients with chronic atrophic gastritis with or without intestinal metaplasia.Entities:

Kimura-Takemoto classification
| Type | Classification | Definition |
|---|---|---|
| Closed Type | C-1 | Atrophy visible in the antrum but not in the corpus |
| C-2 | Atrophy visible parabolically above the angulus and below the middle of the stomach on the lesser curvature | |
| C-3 | Atrophy visible parabolically above the middle of the stomach on the lesser curvature | |
| Opened Type | O-1 | The atrophic border lies between the lesser curvature and the anterior wall |
| O-2 | The atrophic border lies on the anterior wall | |
| O-3 | The atrophic border lies between the anterior wall and the greater curvature |
