Abstract
Background: Airway pressure release ventilation (APRV) is a relatively new mode of ventilation in neonates. We hypothesize that APRV is an effective rescue mode in infants failing conventional ventilation and it is comparable in survival rates to rescue with high-frequency oscillatory ventilation (HFOV).Entities:

Figure 1(a) Decrease in peak pressures with use of airway pressure release ventilation (APRV) for rescue, following failure on synchronized intermittent mandatory ventilation (SIMV). (b) Associated increase in mean airway pressures with APRV as compared to SIMV. Closed circles to the left represent SIMV and to the right represent APRV. Transparent gray lines represent individual patients. Solid black line represents mean.
Infants failing SIMV rescued with APRV.
