Abstract
This paper is a brief survey of the systems of genetic exchange in bacteria relevant to the spread of antibiotic resistance genes. Emphasis is given to those systems most likely to be important in nature, particularly conjugation. Several recently described examples of conjugation in Gram-positive bacteria are discussed and contrasted with the better studied examples in Gram-negative bacteria.Mesh:
