VO2peak will be measured at the end of the assessment visit (day 1 or 2). Prior to the testing, participants will be asked to avoid exercise, caffeine, alcohol, and tobacco for 24 h and food for 1 h.
MRS, MRI, and DXA scans will be conducted on the same day (day 1 or 2). Prior to the scans, participants will be asked to fast for at least 4 h, but will be allowed to drink water and take their usual medications. Participants will be asked to evacuate their bowels and bladder before scanning.
Participants will be asked to fast for at least 10 h.

Aged 18–60 years Central obesity, defined as BMI ≥25 and waist circumference of ≥90/80 cm for men/women Ethnic Chinese Cantonese, Mandarin, or English speaking | Physically active (≥150 min moderate-intensity exercise weekly or ≥ 75 min vigorous-intensity exercise weekly) Regular HIIT (≥ one session weekly) Medical history: a. Chronic pulmonary disease Kidney disease Heart failure and coronary artery disease Cancer Liver disease except for MAFLD Somatic conditions that limit exercise participation (e.g., limb loss) Inability to ambulate at a high intensity due to chronic disease Smoking habit Excessive alcohol consumption (20 g daily/140 g weekly for men and 10 g daily/70 g weekly for women) Surgery, therapy, or medication for obesity or weight loss (e.g., gastric bypass, gastric band, sleeve gastrectomy, gastric reduction duodenal switch, or dietitian-prescribed dietary program) Body size limitation, claustrophobia or metal implants, which precludes entry in the MRI machine |
