Abstract
BACKGROUND: Hand hygiene is a fundamental action which is simple, inexpensive and an effective tool in reducing hospital-acquired infections, yet compliance remains low in healthcare settings. In 2014, Changi General Hospital embarked on a pilot project to improve hand hygiene compliance in a pilot ward with the intention to eventually spread a multifaceted set of interventions hospital wide.Entities:

Operational definitions for measures
| Measure | Numerator | Denominator | Calculation |
| Hand hygiene compliance rate | Number of hand hygiene actions performed (ie, hand washing with soap and water or rubbing hands with alcohol-based hand sanitiser). Hand hygiene action is only valid once with every hand hygiene opportunity. | Number of hand hygiene opportunities observed | Hand hygiene compliance (%)=number of hand hygiene actions performed/ |
| Alcohol hand rub usage | Not applicable | Not applicable | Usage of alcohol hand rub in litres |
| Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) rate | Number of MRSA positive patients on exit | Number of patients screened | MRSA rate=number of MRSA positive patients on exit/number of patients screened |
