Much attention has been given to care and welfare of livestock on the farm, and to ensuring slaughter itself is as painless as possible. However, reducing stress during capture and transport to slaughter remains a challenge (Edwards-Callaway and Calvo-Lorenzo, 2020). Because the animal has no opportunity for future positive experiences, the “Shape of a Life” theory suggests that higher importance should be placed on the stress endured during transport and slaughter (Browning & Veit, 2022).
