Abstract
Mechanical ventilation is a lifesaving therapy for critically ill patients with respiratory failure, but like all treatments, it has the potential to cause harm if not administered appropriately. This review aims to give an overview of the basic principles of invasive and noninvasive mechanical ventilation. Topics covered include modes of mechanical ventilation, respiratory mechanics and ventilator waveform interpretation, strategies for initial ventilator settings, indications and contraindications for noninvasive ventilation, and the effect of the ventilator on kidney function.Entities:
