Abstract
BACKGROUND: Sarcopenia is prognostic for survival in patients with head and neck cancer (HNC). However, identification of this high-risk feature remains challenging without computed tomography (CT) imaging of the abdomen or thorax. Herein, we establish sarcopenia thresholds at the C3 level and determine if C3 sarcopenia is associated with survival in patients with HNC.Entities:

Figure 1Representative axial CT images of the third cervical (A) and third lumbar (B) vertebral levels used to quantify skeletal muscle index (highlighted in red).
Figure 2Correlation plots of L3 and C3 skeletal muscle indices in (A) men and (B) women with head and neck cancer. Dotted lines delineate the intersection of previously established L3 sarcopenia thresholds with the estimated C3 sarcopenia thresholds.
Clinical-demographic tables for validation set, stratified by C3-defined sarcopenia (Men: C3<14.0; Women: C3<11.1; n = 536).
