Abstract
Rheumatoid arthritis often begins in the hand, and upper extremity function can be seriously impaired with progression of the disease. When numerous areas are involved, a multitude of deformities can arise. Before initiating treatment of an arthritic patient, the surgeon must understand the natural course of the disease process, the response to medical treatment, and the functional limitations the disease has imposed.
